A few months back, well before the Mattel lead-paint recall, we bought a lead testing kit for a few bucks at the hardware store to test a few old toys our daughter had inherited from my and my wife's baby toys (from about the time lead paint was first banned) that had been saved in various attics. Never thought I'd be testing toys that are sold in stores currently.
That's great info, thanks for the tip. How has the testing kit worked out?
The testing kit seems to be working fine. None of the toys we've tested (I think we've tested 4 items) had lead according to the test. We bought the Pro-Lab Lead Surface kit:

(Gotta love the picture on the package.) The test is very easy to use, can be used six times, and doesn't require sending in the results for laboratory analysis like some lead test kits do.
